Many people are unsure whether their dental issue requires emergency attention. To help you decide, here are some common dental emergencies:
Severe toothache that doesn’t go away with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Broken, chipped, or knocked-out tooth due to trauma or an accident.
Completely lost permanent tooth, especially if it happened within the past hour.
Visible swelling or abscess in the gums or face, which may indicate an infection.
Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth following an injury or recent dental procedure.
Loose crowns, bridges, or dentures that cause discomfort or interfere with eating.
If you’re experiencing any of these issues, it’s best to seek emergency dental care as soon as possible.
Knowing how to respond in the moment can protect your oral health and increase the chance of a full recovery. Here’s what you should do:
1. Stay Calm
It’s natural to feel anxious, but staying calm will help you think clearly and take the right steps quickly.
2. Control the Bleeding
If there is bleeding, gently apply a clean gauze or soft cloth to the area and press lightly. If the bleeding doesn’t stop after 10 minutes, call our office right away.
3. Save a Knocked-Out Tooth
If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, hold it by the crown (the top part), rinse it gently with water—don’t scrub—and place it in a container with milk or saline. You can also carefully try to place it back into the socket. Time is critical, especially within the first 30–60 minutes.
4. Rinse with Warm Water
Rinsing your mouth with warm water helps keep the area clean and can reduce irritation. Avoid hot or strong rinses.
5. Apply a Cold Compress
For swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek. This can help reduce inflammation and ease pain.
6. Call Biohax Dental

Some actions can make things worse. Here are a few things to avoid:
Do not place crushed aspirin or pain relievers directly on your gums or teeth, as this can burn the soft tissues.
Do not ignore severe pain—it’s a sign that something needs attention.
Do not use sharp objects (like tweezers or toothpicks) to try and remove anything stuck between teeth.
At Biohax Dental, we combine modern dental technology with a warm and personalized approach to care. Dr. Daylis de Andrade is highly trained in handling urgent dental situations and takes the time to explain your condition and options in a clear, reassuring manner.
We understand how stressful a dental emergency can be, and our goal is to provide relief, restore your dental health, and make sure you feel cared for throughout the entire process.
While some emergencies are unavoidable, there are several steps you can take to reduce the risk:
Attend regular dental check-ups, even if you feel fine.
Wear a mouthguard during contact sports or activities with a risk of injury.
Avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens, or fingernails.
Practice daily oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and rinsing.
The sooner you act, the better the outcome. If you think you’re experiencing a dental emergency, don’t hesitate—call Biohax Dental at (305) 603-8373 and ask for Dr. Daylis de Andrade. We’re here to restore your comfort and help you smile again.
